Give them access to their preferred web browser, and maybe a couple of other things, in a place where they know they can always find them, and they're good.The Dock is a prominent feature of the graphical user interface of macOS. Nontechnical folks tend not to change Apple's defaults, much, because, I think, they just fundamentally don't care. Most folks use it as a container for frequently used applications, and little else. The taskbar is more or less a window switcher, until cramming every open window, along with always-visible system items (tray items) got to be massively cluttered, and they started paring things down.Īpple doesn't frontload the Dock with everything it can possibly contain, because they've had around twenty years of feedback, at this point, for how most people use their Docks. Microsoft doesn't frontload it with a ton of apps, because they expect the central UI convention for finding stuff and launching apps to be the Start menu.

The Windows taskbar isn't trying to solve the same problems as the Dock, so of course it tends to look a lot different. You can still dock network locations, including network shares, and web URLs. (Or, you're putting stuff in the bottom section of the dock, below the divider, if you use a vertical Dock.) You can still dock folders, which is why Apple sticks Downloads in there by default, and you have several choices for what that will look like, and if and how a given folder will present its contents. What the Dock is not is a single-use container for just applications that's just how most folks have ended up using it, because Apple puts a selection of default apps in the Dock and folks either don't change that much, or they're used to the Apple menu being the place you put stuff you wanted to get to quickly, in a place that was always available - which tended to be apps.īut you can still put all sorts of stuff in the right side of the Dock next to the Trash that isn't an app. The Dock ended up trying to be several things at once, which somewhat defeated the "let your hands do it on autopilot" muscle memory you could build up with something like a menu - icons are minimally moving targets in the Dock as they grow and shrink as you launch and quit stuff - but they saw the tradeoff as worth it, for the various UI conventions it could replace or hybridize into one, always-available container. (Remember the springy icon you'd get if you docked a web URL?)

Some of the decisions Apple made with the OS X Dock defeat that, of course, but that's because they were trying to fix what they saw as shortcomings of both the old Mac Apple Menu, and the NEXTSTEP Dock's tile-based approach, which grew across, and up your screen, if you chose to stash tiles there.Īpple wanted something that served as an app launcher and switcher (so running apps go in there, as well as permanently docked apps), and a replacement for the Apple menu, and an all-sorts-of-other-shortcuts container, all at once. I could get to Control Panels, or Photoshop or any number of things I regularly used just by flinging my mouse in the direction of the upper-left corner of the screen, and I rarely bothered to look at icons or read menu items, once I had my Apple menu configured to my liking.Įverything just lived where it lived, and after a short while, using it happened more-or-less automatically. Old school Mac users were used to having a place to stash frequently-used applications in one place, and the Apple menu, customized to your liking, was navigable by muscle memory alone.
I think some of this is explainable if you consider the Dock a hybrid of the old, classic MacOS Apple Menu, and the NEXTSTEP Dock.
